Munitions knowledge at your fingertips

The Ammunition Multimedia Encyclopedia allows military and civilian personnel to have access to munitions information, even in the most remote locations.
MCALESTER, Okla., April 26, 2011 -- Imagine a Soldier in the hills of Afghanistan or civilian supporting training in a remote area in the back woods somewhere needs critical information on a new piece of munitions. Where can they go to access this information? They can't call back to base. They can't carry a rucksack full reference books with them.

The Defense Ammunition Center, or DAC, partnering with Serco Inc. and Oklahoma State University, has responded to this need. The Ammunition Multimedia Encyclopedia, or AME, was created to provide Soldiers and ammunition civilians in the field a reach-back information center that provides key data related to new munitions items and inspection points.
AME uses virtual reality technology to create a realistic, hands-on training environment and can be used on anything from a desktop computer to an iPhone.
"AME is an electronic performance support tool," explained Upton Shimp, associate director of Operations and Training with the Defense Ammunition Center. "The goal of AME is to provide a surveillance tool to support personnel inspecting munitions. It provides an encyclopedia of currently used munitions which can be used for inspection and refresher training."
AME has been in use for three years. The first year was the pilot phase, folowed by a second year of compiling information for the web version. The final year involved taking the AME to the application environment.

The AME was developed by a small group of Oklahoma State University, or OSU, students, led by Ramesh Sharda, director, Institute for Research in Information Systems, OSU Spears School of Business.
"Designing the AME has been a tremendous learning experience for our students," said Sharda. "Students are gaining knowledge about immersive technology, image editing, iPhone, iPad development, and security regulations for these devices."
"Working with the students to develop new technology that can benefit warfighters has been rewarding for everyone on the project," Sharda said. "In addition, it provides the students with tremendous learning experiences, making them attractive to their prospective employers."
Currently, there are 180 munitions items in the AME available for viewing through the Ammunition Community of Practice https://acc.dau.mil/ammo.
Additionally, 100 munitions items will be added in 2011, totaling 280 different munitions items by the end of this fiscal year.

"Munitions items can be searched by the Department of Defense Identification Code or by name," said Shimp, making AME a very user-friendly tool, that saves time and provides 24-hour munitions support.
Currently, the AME application is targeted toward Quality Assurance Specialist (Ammunition Surveillance) and Ammo Logistics Assistance Representatives in the field who are handling, packaging and inspecting ammunition.
"The plan for the applications environment is to make the AME conducive to the customer," said Sharda. "All information will be uploaded into the memory of mobile application device and used as a reference in the field."
Development of the AME is a win-win situation. It allows military and civilian personnel to have access to munitions information, even in the most remote locations, and provides hands-on training and experience for OSU business information technology students.

Army deploying 'Individual Gunshot Detector'

A Soldier demonstrates how the Individual Gunshot Detector is worn. The first of 13,000 of these systems will be sent to Afghanistan later this month.
ARLINGTON, Va. (Army News Service, March 14, 2011) -- U.S. Army forces in Afghanistan will begin receiving the first of more than 13,000 gunshot detection systems for the individual dismounted Soldier later this month, service officials said.

"We're really trying to ensure that every Soldier is protected," said Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller, Program Executive Officer Soldier.
The Individual Gunshot Detector, or IGD - made by QinetiQ North America - consists of four small acoustic sensors worn by the individual Soldier and a small display screen attached to body armor that shows the distance and direction of incoming fire.
The small sensor, about the size of a deck of cards, detects the supersonic sound waves generated by enemy gunfire and instantaneously alerts Soldiers to the location and distance toward the hostile fire, said Lt. Col. Chris Schneider, product manager for Soldier Maneuver Sensors.

"When you get fired on, instead of trying to figure everything out, you will have technology to assist you in knowing what happened and where the shot was coming from," Fuller said.
The entire IGD system, procured by PEO Soldier and the Army's Rapid Equipping Force, weighs less than two pounds, Schneider said.
The idea is to strategically disperse the systems throughout small, dismounted units to get maximum protective coverage for platoons, squads and other units on the move, Schneider explained.

Over the next 12 months, the Army plans to field up to 1,500 IGDs per month, he said.

In the future, the Army plans to integrate this technology with its Land Warrior and Nett Warrior systems. These are network-situational-awareness systems for dismounted units, complete with a helmet-mounted display screen that uses GPS digital-mapping-display technology, Fuller said.
"The next thing we want to do is try to integrate this capability with other capabilities; for example, we have Land Warrior deployed in Afghanistan and we're going to have Nett Warrior coming into the force. How about, if you get shot at, not only do I know where that came from, but others know where it came from because I can network that capability," said Fuller.

"It's about how to leverage technology to improve your survivability and situational awareness."

QinetiQ - Gunshot targeting microphones.

Small lightweight microphones are saving the lives of US soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shoulder Worn Acoustic Targeting Systems (SWATS), developed by defense company QinetiQ, use shockwave and muzzle blast noise to locate enemy gunfire . A single shot is all it takes to give the soldier the bearing and distance to the sniper trying to take his life. A tactical display or audio alert from the device tells the soldier where to look so they can return fire or take cover.
With SWATS, you go from sitting duck to well-informed angry defender in less than a second. QinetiQ recently announced that the US Army had ordered 13,500 SWATS units, with the option to pick up 30,000 more. The Marine Corps placed an order for 900.
According to the MC Times, these branches already have roughly 4000 and 150 of the units in the field, respectively. Watch SWATS in action with real gunfire in the videos below. Sensors like these are just some of the many devices that are augmenting human soldiers for modern warfare.

Shadow Dextrous Hand

The Shadow Dextrous Hand offers a wireless solution to bomb disposal…

British engineers have designed a highly dexterous remote-controlled robotic hand that they hope could lead to a breakthrough in the field of bomb disposal.
The robotic hand, dubbed the Shadow Dextrous Hand, contains 20 motors – each corresponding to a joint of the human hand – and is able to replicate 24 precise movements often performed by the hand.
The new C6M2 unit can be controlled by a glove that has an array of sensors connected to a computer. The sensors track wearers movements and then relays the information wirelessly the unit which replicates them in real-time.
Developers the Shadow Robot Company, hopes that within the next two years it will have progressed the technology to replicate the sophisticate movements required to dispose bombs.

Jake Goldsmith, robotics engineer at Shadow told, that they were ‘eighteen months to two years away from being able to have the technology.’
One major hurdle, explained Goldsmith, is getting the pressure right as many actions performed by the fingers needs a good amount of force, but not too much.
The company is already in talks with the Military; however they must first prove that the device is precise enough to be deployed with the bomb disposal unit.
The Shadow Dextrous Hand was on display at the TechnologyWorld forum at London’s Excel Centre early in December, 2010.

Intel for the individual

Smart phones offer soldiers potential for specific ISR in the field
By Lance M. Bacon - Staff writer
Posted : Saturday Jan 8, 2011

A weapon is in the works that will change combat as you know it. It will not be a machine gun, aircraft or up-armored vehicle.
This weapon will be a smart phone, just like the one you use to call home and share texts, with one difference: This one will deliver battlefield intelligence to the soldiers who need it most.
Smart phone applications already are used at some training bases. Lt. Gen. Michael Vane, director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center, has said he would like the Army to issue smart phones just like any other “piece of equipment in a soldier’s clothing bag,” suggesting the Army might provide soldiers with a budget for apps and call time.
The challenge will be going from practical to tactical. Many Army leaders want to use this technology to provide real-time intelligence for soldiers on the battlefield, and will field phones, network equipment and applications in February under the brigade combat team modernization program.
If done right, the technology can protect soldiers from falling prey to ambushes like the one Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta, the recent Medal of Honor recipient, encountered in Afghanistan, said Brig. Gen. Peter Fuller of Program Executive Office Soldier. Fuller shared his vision for greater lethality and survivability during an exclusive interview with Army Times in late December.
He questioned why soldiers are ambushed when intel exists that could alert them to the enemy’s location.

Imaging gear would give soldiers 'Terminator'-like vision

No more will soldiers' vision be limited to the socket-embedded spheres that God intended. The Pentagon now wants troops to see dangers lurking behind them in real time, and be able to tell if an object a kilometer away is a walking stick or an AK-47.
In a solicitation released today, Darpa, the Pentagon's far-out research branch, unveiled the Soldier Centric Imaging via Computational Cameras effort, or SCENICC. Imagine a suite of cameras that digitally capture a kilometer-wide, 360-degree sphere, representing the image in 3-D onto a wearable eyepiece.
You'd be able to literally see all around you, including behind yourself, and zooming in at will, creating a "stereoscopic/binocular system, simultaneously providing 10x zoom to both eyes." And you would do this all hands-free, apparently by barking out or pre-programming a command (the solicitation leaves it up to a designer's imagination) to adjust focus.
Then comes the Terminator-vision. Darpa wants the eyepiece to include "high-resolution computer-enhanced imagery as well as task-specific non-image data products such as mission data overlays, threat warnings/alerts, targeting assistance, etc." Target identified: Sarah Connor... The "Full Sphere Awareness" tool will provide soldiers with "muzzle flash detection," "projectile tracking" and "object recognition/labeling," basically pointing key information out to them.
And an "integrated weapon sighting" function locks your gun on your target when acquired. That's far beyond an app mounted on your rifle that keeps track of where your friendlies and enemies are.
The imaging wouldn't just be limited to what any individual soldier sees. SCENICC envisions a "networked optical sensing capability" that fuses images taken from nodes worn by "collections of soldiers and/or unmanned vehicles." The Warrior-Alpha drone overhead? Its full-motion video and still images would be sent into your eyepiece.
It also has to be ridiculously lightweight, weighing less than 700 grams for the entire system -- including a battery powerful enough to "exceed 24 hours [usage] under normal conditions." That's about a pound and a half, maximum. The Army's experimental ensemble of wearable gadgets weighs about eight pounds. And it is to SCENICC what your Roomba is to the T-1000.
Here's how far advanced SCENICC is compared to bleeding-edge imaging and networking capabilities that the Army is currently developing. Right now, the Army's asking three different companies -- Raytheon, Rockwell Collins and General Dynamics -- to build a wearable platform of digital maps, computers and radios, networked with one another. Soldiers would have war-zone maps beamed onto helmet-mounted eyepieces.
The system, known as Nett Warrior, needs to weigh less than eight pounds, and it builds on a years-long and ultimately fruitless effort called Land Warrior. (One of the problems with Land Warrior is it was heavy and cumbersome, owing in part to battery weight.) The Army hopes to choose one of the Nett Warrior designs by March.
By the time it'll actually roll out Nett Warrior after testing, production and deployment -- a few years, optimistically -- SCENICC will already be hard at work on its replacement. Darpa wants a hands-free zooming function within two years of work on the contract. By year three, the computer-enhanced vision tool needs to be ready. Year four is for 360-degree vision. Then it's on to development.
The Army is generally hot for combat-ready smart-phones to keep soldiers linked up with each other. And the buzz-generating tool for the soldier of the near future is mapping technology, delivered onto a smart-phone or some other hand-held mobile device, at least judging from this year's Association of the U.S. Army confab.
But all of these representation tools are two-dimensional, and require soldiers to look away from their patrols in order to use them. Textron's SoldierEyes Common Operating Picture, for instance, lets soldiers see icons on a tablet-mounted map telling them where their friends, enemies and neutrals are. It can't put those icons onto a 3-D picture sent to a soldier's eyes, let alone allow a 10x zoom for a kilo-wide 360-degree field of vision. Why would anyone use a map on a smart-phone when they could have SCENICC?
Even with all the advances in digital imaging, it'll be a tall order to put together 360-degree vision and 10x zoom and mapping software and integration with weapons systems and lightweight miniaturization and network connectivity.
Darpa doesn't really address how the system's networked optics would work in low-bandwidth areas like, say, eastern Afghanistan (though maybe drone-borne cell towers can help).
Indeed, judging from the solicitation, while SCENICC is supposed to be networked, it doesn't seem to have any communications requirements for soldiers to talk through what their optics are sharing with each other. Maybe there's a role for those new soldier smart-phones after all.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pentagon's Darpa unit unveiled a camera system that can project a 3-D image
  • You'd be able to see all around you, including behind yourself, and zooming in at will
  • An "integrated weapon sighting" function locks your gun on your target when acquired

Battelle Designs Innovative Grappling Gun Technology

Pneumatic Launcher Propels Grappling Hooks, Ladders

COLUMBUS, OH - Who can resist the Batman-like allure of shooting a grappling hook and line that lets you cross a gorge or scale a building? Those in the special operations, first responder and maritime communities see this plummet gun as a must-have tool.
Battelle has developed a successor to a longtime Navy staple -- a pneumatically powered grappling gun that deploys a hook and line higher, further, more quietly, and more reliably than its predecessor.
The system has been featured on the popular TV show MythBusters and The Military Channel's Weaponology and continues to captivate those who see it in action.
The Tactical Air Initiated Launch (TAIL) system is used to propel a titanium grappling hook towing a Kevlar line for use in Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) operations. It also can be used for fire rescue operations, life vest deployment, or other activities. The TAIL system, using compressed air to launch the hook, can clear an obstacle up to 100 feet high and up to 60 feet away. "The TAIL system lets the user fire a grappling hook without the noise, explosives, or safety issues of powder-driven units," said Jim LaBine, the TAIL system designer. "That's important for special operations but the system is adaptable and can be used in many applications."
Besides enhanced performance at reduced cost, the TAIL system's simple, rugged design boosts safety and reliability with the advantage of low maintenance. Its simplicity has another benefit: the system can throw any object that fits into its barrel. Potential uses include:
  • Tactical hook and line or hook and ladder deployment
  • Line deployment for ship to ship re-supply
  • Line deployment for water or fire rescue
  • Life vest deployment for Coast Guard and rescue units
  • Mine clearance
  • Delivery of sensitive electronic payloads
As the world's largest, independent research and development organization, Battelle provides innovative solutions to the world's most pressing needs through its four global businesses: Laboratory Management, National Security, Energy Technology, and Health and Life Sciences. It advances scientific discovery and application by conducting $6.2 billion in global R&D annually through contract research, laboratory management and technology commercialization. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Battelle oversees 22,000 employees in more than 130 locations worldwide, including seven national laboratories which Battelle manages or co-manages for the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and one international nuclear laboratory in the United Kingdom.
Battelle also is one of the nation's leading charitable trusts focusing on societal and economic impact and actively supporting and promoting science and math education.

CRKT Exit Tool

Every driver has a concern about being trapped in a vehicle in an accident.
First, there is the worry about being unable to release a seat belt because it is jammed or if the release is inaccessible. Second, there are the difficulties of escaping a vehicle that has been submerged in water. Water pressure may make it difficult or impossible to open doors or lower windows until water has seeped in and the internal pressure is equalized.
Custom knifemaker Russ Kommer recognized the need for a simple and affordable emergency tool. We call it the ExiTool™. The ExiTool fits inobtrusively onto any standard seat belt with a simple folding clasp. It includes a seat belt cutter, a tungsten carbide window breaker, and a bright L.E.D. flashlight.
The seat belt cutter has been carefully designed so that is virtually impossible for even the smallest fingers to accidentally reach the blade. Its blade is made of Razor-Sharp high-carbon stainless steel, and will cut seat belts in one quick pull.

The side windows of modern vehicles are made of glass which is tempered to shatter on impact. The ExiTool features a small tungsten carbide breaker point. Just grasp the ExiTool body firmly and strike the window to break it. For best results, hit the window as close to the bottom edge as possible.
The breaker has two emergency uses. On dry land, if the vehicle's doors are jammed closed, the breaker can allow instant escape through a side window. If the vehicle is submerged, most safety experts recommend using the air supply which is trapped inside before breaking a window to avoid a sudden onrushing flow of water. However, this will vary depending on the depth of the water and the condition of the passengers. The ExiTool will allow driver or passengers to break the window instantly when it is needed.
The L.E.D. light uses one replaceable CR2032 3-Volt lithium battery. Of course, the flashlight is useful in non-emergency situations, too.
We think every vehicle should have at least one ExiTool.
Specifications
  • 9030: Seat Belt Cutter, Window Breaker, L.E.D. Flashlight

Consisting of a locking cap, two-piece body which houses a Fisher Space Pen Refill with spring laminated to avert losing the spring.  The pen has a tip designed to be used as a stylus with a handheld computer or GPS unit for example.  When writing the pen fits nicely in your hand light and evenly balanced.  A optional watertight, lockable Otter box with high density foam for transport that has compartments for accessories.

UZI Tactical Pen
Law enforcement professionals know that they always need to expect the unexpected.  That a routine traffic stop could become un-routine at any moment.  The UZI Tactical Pen takes something as trivial as a pen and turns it into a potential life saving tool.  The most unique feature of the pen is that it employs the UZI DNA Catcher on the crown of the pen.  The sharpened crown on the end can be used to jab or poke an attacker, which will not only cause extreme pain, but it will also collect the aggressors’ DNA which can be used for future identification.   The UZI Tactical Pen is another one of the tools that every officer should keep in their arsenal for those times that they need to expect the unexpected. Made of lightweight aircraft aluminum, it conveniently uses any standard pen refill.
