A frequently maligned and heavily over-budget program to develop the Marine Corps’ next amphibious personnel carrier is on the verge of being canceled, according to several media reports published Wednesday.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates was “poised to cancel” the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle program Thursday morning, when defense officials said he would announce new budget cuts amid heavy political pressure to reduce the Pentagon’s budget, The New York Times reported. The wire service Agence France-Press reported Gates was expected to brief lawmakers Thursday before announcing cuts to several projects, including the cancellation of the EFV program.
