The Marine Corps was hit hard during this round of Pentagon program cuts, which will carry aftershocks for amphibious sailors and other Navy people and programs.
Cancellation of the long-troubled and expensive Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle will bring to an end nearly two decades of work that cost $3 billion in an effort to make what was essentially an armored Dumpster speed across the water at more than 30 knots. The Marines themselves recommended the move — a reflection not only of the great cost to buy and operate a fleet of 573 of the vehicles, but also of a shift in tactical thought that is making the need for such a fast vehicle unnecessary.
